PENINGKATAN KEMAMPUAN BERBICARA BAHASA INGGRIS MAHASISWA MELALUI CONTEXTUAL TEACHING AND LEARNING (Penelitian Tindakan di IAIN Metro Lampung)

This research, which is an action research by conducting three cycles of treatments for fourth-semester of English Education Students at IAIN Metro Lampung, is intended to investigate the implementation of Contextual Teaching and Learning improves the students’ speaking skills especially in form of public speaking namely Storytelling and Speech as major learning objectives in Speaking for Islamic Studies course. Moreover, data gained from qualitative data in from of interview, observation and filed notes during teaching learning process as well as quantitative data taken from speaking test of three cycles consisting of two phases; Storytelling and Speech. The data would be analyzed by comparing between the results of pre-test which is about 56. 63 and post test after conducting cycle-treatments which are in the first cycle, storytelling I achieves 58. 80, Speech I gains 65. 75, then, in the second, storytelling II achieves 65. 05, Speech IIis about66. 48, and finally storytelling III achieves 71. 40, Speech IIIis about74. 60. Moreover, students feel more enthusiastic cooperatively in group work and think critically to relate their conceptual understanding and its real-context during their involvement in speaking class. In other words, CTL can improve the students’ speaking skills and their learning activity. Therefore, CTL may be implemented as one of effective-speaking-teaching methods especially for Islamic Context.
